Vacuum Coating System

The vacuum coating system was originally housed in Manila Observatory. The original purpose of this system is to coat the lenses and mirrors of the spectroheliograph. Later, the vacuum coating sytem was moved to the Padre Faura Science Hall where it remains today. Other vacuum coating system parts were later donated from University of Pennsylvania.

The laboratory specializes in the design and fabrication of multilayer thin films with desired reflectance and transmittance spectra. Other vacuum-related experiments were arc discharges under magnetic fields. Students who join the laboratory learn how to disassemble different vacuum coating system setups and build new ones for different research purposes.
