Balik Scientist Jose B. Cruz Jr.’s seminar on Aug 13: Parametric Sensitivity Analysis and Application to Parameter Optimization

You are cordially invited to attend this special seminar:

Parametric Sensitivity Analysis and Application to Parameter Optimization

Jose B Cruz Jr.
DOST Balik Scientist
Ateneo De Manila University

August 13, 2011, 1:30-3:30, Faura 116

ABSTRACT

In much of science and engineering, mathematical models are utilized. For a variety of reasons, a very common model is an ordinary linear differential equation with constant coefficients. Because of idealizations, it is important to study the effect of small errors in the modeling or estimation of the coefficients on the system output or response to a specified input. A natural measure is the partial derivative of the output with respect to the parameters. In this seminar we discuss methods for determining these partial derivatives without directly computing the partial derivatives. The same methods may be applied for choosing control parameters in system optimization.

Mainstreaming environment and climate change: Health

Dear Colleagues,

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is proud to announce our latest publication.

Mainstreaming environment and climate change: Health

This joint publication of IIED and Irish Aid is part of a series that aims to clarify the links between the environment, climate change and key development sectors, and provide guidance on strategies available for mainstreaming the environment and climate change into national policies. This briefing focuses on health. Nearly one quarter of the global disease burden can be attributed to the environment. Improving environmental health – raising its profile at national, state and local levels, and integrating environmental health issues into development plans and activities – is critical if we are to reduce poverty and meet the Millennium Development Goals.

Integrated Climate Impact Assessment Tool for Urban Policy Makers: Expert Consultations

Good day everybody!

Please be informed that there will be an integrated climate impact assessment tool for urban policy makers at ADB headquarters on August 8-11, 2011.

The purpose of this event is to gather policy makers and experts from Asia and around the world to review the features of available tools to help design the conceptualized system, to assess the complex nature of impact and risk assessment for prioritizing projects based on costs and benefits.

Inventory of laboratory equipments

Hi all,

The dean’s office is asking us to sort of make an inventory of our equipments (bought by Ateneo or from research grants) in all the labs. The purpose of this inventory is for SOSE to request more financial support from the administration to buy more equipments and have money to maintain these equipments.

I have attached an excel file to aid in the survey. Each lab coordinator is requested to comply. May we have the list by 11 Aug. 2011? Please email the list to Sir Pat. He will collate them all.

Also, I sent last week the template of the faculty research/group research topic that was asked by Dr. De Las Penas. May we have them by Friday? It is just a one pager.

Thanks!

Scientists for the Philippine Science Hall at the Mind Museum

Dear Dr. Guidote ,

Good day to your kind office. We are searching high and low for scientists who are proudly Filipino and are eager to inspire our future scientists in choosing the same path. Please answer our attached questionnaire and e-mail it back to us along with your science resume and at least (3) three digital pictures of you in action as a scientist. Feel free to forward this e-mail to any of your Filipino colleagues in any of the sciences who you feel would also be interested in being featured in our Philippine Science Hall at THE MIND MUSEUM of Taguig, our country’s first world class science museum. We hope to hear from you before our deadline of August 12, 2011. Let’s help each other bring science closer to the minds and hearts of our people.

Sincerely,

*Marco Philippe M. Araneta*
